Driven by the necessity to enable children to make efficient choices, this purpose-designed, targeted resource provides visual support to teach and secure a range of calculation strategies for children to choose from when asked to solve questions involving the four operations.
Whilst recognising the importance of formal written methods, this resource emphasises the value of strategies such as “If I Know…. Then I know…”, the use of number lines to keep track of thinking as a jotting, bar modelling, using place value manipulatives and more.
When faced with 120 ÷ 3, 601 – 598 or 345 + 199, do we really want children to default to formal written methods? This resource will support year 3 teachers in deciding what to include on a visual arithmetic toolkit display, giving children a rich store of strategies from which to make an informed efficient choice.
